Nov 1    FREE "Being Mortal" Film & Community Discussion Event
The Hastings Honoring Choices Advisory Council, a committed group of community partners and individuals, cordially invites you and your loved ones, to join us for a very special "Being Mortal" Film Screening & Community Discussion Event. The goal of this event is to bring community members and medical professionals together to start the conversation about end of life care, no matter the age of the adult. This 50-minute film will illustrate the importance of thinking and planning ahead as we reflect on what matters most to us. We will educate attendees on the importance of having these conversations with loved ones, along with their doctors and other trusted professionals.

Dr. Bill Spinelli & Mary O'Brien have been trusted resources in our community and will be our discussion facilitators for the evening. They'll be leading a group discussion after the film is viewed. This discussion is aimed to ease fears and concerns associated with having these conversations. Come and join us! Attendees will be encouraged, educated, equipped and inspired to continue these conversations after the event. Many resource partners will be in attendance to help answer questions and provide opportunities to engage or learn more about the next steps in developing your end-of-life wishes.

This is a FREE event for all adults. Reserve your ticket today. Space is limited and this event will sell out.

Doors Open at 5:45 pm
Film & Discussion Begin at 6:30 pm

About the Film...
Being Mortal is a FRONTLINE public television documentary that explores the hopes of patients and families facing terminal illness and their relationships with the doctors who care for them. The documentary tells the story of physician Atul Gawande who is learning to think about death and dying in the context of being a healer. By sharing stories from the perspective of both physicians and the people and families he encounters, including his own, the documentary sheds new light on how our system – so often focused on a cure – neglects the important conversations that need to happen so that a person’s true priorities can be known and honored at the end.
The stories in Being Mortal show us the value of shared decision-making in medicine at the end of life and illustrate the importance of thinking and planning ahead as we reflect on what matters to us most. The stories further reveal the human side of physicians, whose own vulnerabilities, fears, and lack of training may impede timely and open discussions with patients.

About the Venue....
Dr. Travis & Sarah Lockwood are owners and proprietors of the Hastings Art Center. They have graciously donated the use of their beautiful performance space for this special evening. Dr. Lockwood, along with Sarah, understand the gravity of these conversations and the importance of them due to his work as a physician in the Hastings community. We are so grateful for their generosity in hosting this event for us.

About Hastings Honoring Choices Advisory Council....

Nov 5    Have the Talk of a Lifetime® at the Hastings Senior Center

Have the Talk of a Lifetime®

How well do you know the people who matter most to you? Although we may know about some of the significant people, places and events that have shared the lives of our loved one, we don’t know everything. Sitting down with loved ones to talk about their lives can be rich and satisfying.

Have the Talk of a Lifetime® helps people share memories made, lessons learned, life stories, values, interests, and experiences. These discussions also reinforce the importance of memorialization and make it easier for people to remember loved ones in a more meaningful and personal way. Take the time now to talk with loved ones about what matters most in their lives, so you can celebrate them when the time comes. Join us for this interactive presentation at the Hastings Senior Center on Monday, November 5th at 6:30 pm to learn how to get going and receive the tools you need to get started!

Register online at https://bit.ly/2NuYYg6 or by calling the Hastings Senior Center at 651-480-7689.

The presenter for the session is Melissa Stevens. Melissa is the Community Outreach Director Wise Family Funeral Home & Caturia, Smidt & Starkson Funeral Home in Hastings. Melissa is also a Respecting Choices First Steps Advanced Care Planning (ACP) Certified Facilitator. Nov 17    Free Concert-Annie Humphrey, Singer/Songwriter--A Dakota County Libraries Sponsored Event
Enjoy music and poetry that honors Native American culture performed by singer and song writer Annie Humphrey.

About Annie
Growing up on the Leech Lake Indian Reservation in Northern Minnesota, Annie lived in a home filled with voices made of thunder and nothing could stop it.  Her parents were brilliant people individually.  Her father, a singer and musician and her mother an artist and poet.  Together they made sadness.  Each of her parents taught Annie the beautiful things they knew.  They showed her that she carried their gifts in her hands too.  This is how creating art and music came about for her.  This is  what saved her.  This is how she lives now.

Things my dad taught me:
skin a deer, set net, clean fish, make maple syrup, harvest wild rice, play basketball, ride motorcycle, go without if you can't afford it, play guitar

Things my mom taught me:
draw, paint, sew, write, laugh, wonder, forgive
Annie has 4 children and 2 grandsons.  She has a handsome, Indian, horseman husband.  They inspire her spirit and her art.

Nov 22    Gobble Gait 2018

Gobble Gait started in 1998 as a small race to raise some additional money for the Hastings Family Service.  Years later, we are still raising money to benefit Hastings Family Service, but it is no longer a small race!  Our 2k and 8k combined are now averaging well over 2,000 runners each year, and have consistently been one of the Twin Cities' largest Thanksgiving Day runs!  Many families have made it their traditional way to kick off the holiday season!

GOBBLE GAIT

Our race registration fees, paired with the hard work of race volunteers and the generosity of over 150 sponsors from around the community, have enabled Gobble Gait to raise over  a MILLION DOLLARS for Hastings Family Service!  Not to mention the tons of food that our race day food drive has brought in!  Wow!  These funds are used by Hastings Family Service to provide assistance to families in need of basic necessities like food, transportation and clothing.

On a day we celebrate our blessings.... it's such a great, fun way to give back!  We hope you make Gobble Gait a part of your Thanksgiving tradition!

Nov 24    It's A Wonderful Life Play
On Christmas Eve in Bedford Falls, the guardian angel Clarence is assigned to convince the desparate George Bailey not to end his life.  George has spent his entire life giving of himself to his community.  He gave up his dream of traveling the world in order to run the modest building and loan company that his father started which keeps the rich skinflint Mr. Potter from owning the whole town.  George married his sweetheart Mary and had four children all who love him dearly.  On Christmas Eve, George's uncle Billy loses $8000 of his company's money on his way to deposit it, and it is found and stolen by Mr. Potter.  The bank examiner discovers the shortage and if George can't find the money he will be jailed, the business will collapse, and Mr. Potter will finally take over the town.  George realizes he is worth more dead than alive which brings him to contemplate suicide.  But the prayers of the people who love him reach heaven and Clarence is sent to help George as his chance to earn his wings.  Clarence shows George just what life would have been like in Bedford Falls without him.
