Each year more than 132,000 students in grades 6-8 enter the VFW’s Patriot’s Pen youth essay contest. The first-place winner from each state competes for national awards totaling $54,500, with each first-place state winner receiving a minimum of $500 at the national level. The national first-place winner wins $5,000 and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. 

The essay contest encourages young minds to examine America’s history, along with their own experiences in modern American society, by drafting a 300- to 400-word essay, expressing their views based on a patriotic theme chosen by the VFW Commander-in-Chief.

Sep 21 - Jan 31    $40K in Academic Scholarships available from Affinity Plus Foundation
The Affinity Plus Foundation is now accepting applications for its annual scholarship program. This year, the foundation will be awarding eight, $5,000 scholarships to student members of Affinity Plus. In an effort to maximize the reach and impact of the scholarships, a scholarship will be given to two students from each of the following student categories: • incoming freshmen • upperclassmen • nontraditional • graduate Applicants are able to self-select the category from which they would like to be considered. The online application is open now through January 31, 2017. Applicants must be a primary member of Affinity Plus and provide transcripts and an essay response. Nontraditional and graduate students also need to submit two letters of recommendation. Scholarship dollars awarded are intended for expenses for the 2017-2018 school year. Oct 1    Top MN Artists Paint Hastings/Prescott En Plein Air
Discover top local artists!
On October 1, fourteen of the top landscape painters in the state will be painting En Plein Air (in the open air) in Hastings and Prescott from approximately 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
The public is invited to attend a reception to view their completed paintings at Evansen Art Studio from 5 to 6 pm. Some of the artists will be available to discuss their work and answer questions.

These high quality original paintings of the two communities will be available in the auction at the HPAAC Gala on November 4. Artists will set a price on each painting which will serve as an opening bid for the auction. If anyone is interested in purchasing a painting at the flat price set by the artist prior to ...going on the auction block, October 1 reception is the only opportunity.

The popular Vermillion Falls Walking tour returns to the LeDuc Historic Estate on the second Saturday of October at 10:00 a.m. Visitors will gather at the LeDuc house and then proceed to the Vermillion Falls area. Prepaid reservations at $11 per person are required by calling 651-438-8480. The walking tour also includes a guided tour of the magnificent LeDuc Historic Estate. The walking tour will take visitors to Hastings' most beautiful park, just blocks from the Estate. Visitors will learn how the Vermillion River and the milling industry shaped Hastings, while taking in the natural beauty of the river and the breathtaking falls.

The Hastings Chamber of Commerce has partnered with Hastings Community TV to host a candidate forum for Hastings City Council (wards 1 - 4), MN House District 54B and MN Senate District 54.  This event is open to the public and Chamber members.  It's an excellent opportunity to hear straight from candidates in an impartial and unbiased format.  The forum will stream live on Hastings Community TV Ch. 16 and on the Hastings Community TV Facebook page, interested parties can also listen to it on KDWA 1460AM or FM97.7.
