As part of Hunger Action Month, Affinity Plus is actively supporting the efforts of one of its Charities of Choice, Second Harvest Heartland, to help raise dollars and awareness about hunger in Minnesota. Branches are collecting food donations throughout September, and the Hastings branch of Affinity Plus donates their food donations directly to the Hastings Family Service in an effort to keep the donations local.

Each year more than 132,000 students in grades 6-8 enter the VFW’s Patriot’s Pen youth essay contest. The first-place winner from each state competes for national awards totaling $54,500, with each first-place state winner receiving a minimum of $500 at the national level. The national first-place winner wins $5,000 and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. 

The essay contest encourages young minds to examine America’s history, along with their own experiences in modern American society, by drafting a 300- to 400-word essay, expressing their views based on a patriotic theme chosen by the VFW Commander-in-Chief.

The Affinity Plus Foundation is now accepting applications for its annual scholarship program. This year, the foundation will be awarding eight, $5,000 scholarships to student members of Affinity Plus. In an effort to maximize the reach and impact of the scholarships, a scholarship will be given to two students from each of the following student categories: • incoming freshmen • upperclassmen • nontraditional • graduate Applicants are able to self-select the category from which they would like to be considered. The online application is open now through January 31, 2017. Applicants must be a primary member of Affinity Plus and provide transcripts and an essay response. Nontraditional and graduate students also need to submit two letters of recommendation. Scholarship dollars awarded are intended for expenses for the 2017-2018 school year. Carpenter Nature Center is pleased to host the fall raptor release which is presented by the 3M Foundation in partnership with The Raptor Center of the University of Minnesota and CNC. Visitors will enjoy watching 4-6 wild birds of prey take to the air after being rehabilitated by The Raptor Center's veterinarians, staff and volunteers. Arrive early for either the 11:00 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. programs as you will need time to get your vehicle parked and walk to the release site. The day is full of fun with orchard hay wagon tours, educational raptor displays, kids’ activities and more. This is a FREE event.
