May 2    Carpenters: Close to You - Hastings Concert Association
Considered on of the best vocalists of all time, Karen Carpenter captured the attention of a generation with her catchy pops music.  Now singer Lisa Rock and her 6 piece band are bringing the music of The Carpenters back to the stage with their spot-on renditions of Carpenter's classics.  Lisa draws the crowd in with anecdotes about Karen and Richard Carpenter, their lives and how some of the songs originated.

May 12    5/12/15 Hastings Police Department Open House
The Hastings Police Department has planned an open house recognizing National Police Week.

The open house will be held from 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 12, at the department which is located on Sibley Street between Third and Fourth streets.

Sibley Street will be closed during the event in order for the department to be able to show its vehicles and meet and greet members of the public.

At 5 p.m., there will be a presentation by Dakota County Sheriff Tim Leslie to read the roll of those Dakota County Law Enforcement Officers who have died in the line of duty.

Sponsors for the event include Duff's Meats 2, River City Popcorn Company and United Way of Hastings.

May 13    Senior Silver Tea with Pop Wagner
Area seniors may tap their toes to a variety of traditional music from Pop Wagner, a curator of fine fiddle music who has appeared frequently on A Prairie Home Companion, and John Hurt, a style guitarist, cowboy singer, and lasso twirler.

Tonight mezzo soprano Mary Kirchner will sing selections from Charles Ives and Cole Porter.  She will be accompanied on the piano by Jim Reilly.  Jim will also perform solo on the piano, playing selections from early Faure, Grieg, and Grigges.

Mary Kirchner has performed for Thursday Musical in all of their venues which include the Thursday Musical Artist Series, the Home Program Series and the Community Concert Series, which this evening represents.  In addition, Mrs. Kirchner has appeared in music venues in Nebraska, Missouri, Wisconsin, Iowa and Colorado as well as many years of performing in Twin Cities venues.  She has also served Thursday Musical in many administrative capacities, including the presidency.

Jim Reilly is a Thursday Musical Artist member as both a tenor and pianist; he appears most often as a vocal accompanist.  He has performed in over twenty states as well as Holland and Norway.  The Music Director Emeritus at Mindekirken, our area's only Norwegian language church, he has a specialty in Nordic repertoire, but he also performs regularly at the Minneapolis/Saint Paul Alliance Francaise where he is in the process of raising money for repairs of the Alliance's fine Steinway grand piano.

May 17    Apple Blossom Races

Celebrate Spring with Carpenter St. Croix Valley Nature Center’s Apple Blossom Races. The 5K uses all paved surfaces, walkers are welcome on the 5K only.  The 10K uses some of the same route but breaks off and follows almost 4 miles of the Nature Center’s trail system overlooking the St. Croix River. Some of the trails are not paved. The hilly 1/2 Marathon follows some local roadways near the Nature Center and passes many of the area’s apple orchards that promise to be at or near full bloom.

The 5K, 10K, and 1/2 Marathon all start at 8:00 a.m. at St. Croix Bluffs Regional Park, 3 miles north of the Nature Center on County Road 21. Arrive early, park and register at Carpenter Nature Center then enjoy a chauffeured ride to the starting line. Water, portable toilets, route maps, starting instructions and complimentary clothing check available at the start. All races finish in front of the Nature Center’s interpretive center. Water and split-timers will be plentiful on each course. The 2K Fun Run will start at the Nature Center at 11:15am or as soon as the last half marathon runner finishes.

Additional T-shirts will be available at a later date. 2K registration is free without T-shirt, $10.00 with a T-shirt.

This first qualifying round is exclusively for Hastings High School vocalists.  Those who qualify will go on to the finals held at Rivertown Days on Sunday, July 19 at 3:30. 
The winner of Hastings Sings will have the honor to represent the city of Hastings at the Second Annual Minnesota Sings which will be held Sunday, September 27th at the Holiday Inn St. Paul East (all day event).

Rules:
  • Must sing to a backing track which is on CD (no acapella)
  • Song cannot exceed 5 minutes and must be memorized
  • Can sing any type of music
  • You can purchase a backing track ($0.99-$9.99) or make your own.  The backing track can contain harmonies.
  • Your performance on May 20th will be videotaped and you will receive an e-mail on June 1st telling you if you will advance to the finals on July 19th.
The general public is welcome to attend the May 20th qualifying round.

May 22    Bird Banding
Have you ever wondered what bird banding is all about?  Bird Banding records can help us learn how long birds live, where they travel, when and where they migrate and many other interesting facts.  Carpenter Nature Center has been banding birds for over 30 years.  On the fourth Friday of the month bird banding is open to the public. 
There is no program fee, but donations of Bird Seed and Suet are greatly appreciated.
