THE WOLFGANG--Sunday, May 15, 2016, 3:00pm The WolfGang explores two masterpieces: Beethoven at the Beginning – Mozart in Miniature
With his Opus 1 trios Beethoven expands the piano trio from a polite musical form for genteel chambers to a dramatic and virtuosic tour de force of major proportions. This was a perfect way for Ludwig to launch his publishing career in 1795 at the age of 25. The WolfGang will play the genial, vivacious and virtuosic E flat Major Trio, Op.1, No.1, Beethoven’s first published work, paired with the premiere of a suite (overture, solo arias, and ensembles) from Mozart’s opera of 1785, Le Nozze di Figaro, transcribed for The WolfGang by Paul Jacobson. The overture from this beautiful opera is often heard as a “stand-alone” orchestral work, and now we can revel in the drama of the whole opera – in miniature. The WolfGang performs instrumental chamber music from the time of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, playing on musical instruments of the type that were used during Mozart’s life. The fortepiano is a replica of a Stein fortepiano. The violin, viola and cello are either from the 18th century or are carefully modeled after 18th century instruments. The flute and oboe are modern replicas of instruments made by some of the great woodwind makers of the late 18th century. A Twin-Cities based ensemble, The WolfGang has been performing, recording, and touring for over 16 years in a style that “fits” the Mozart era. We hope you will join us for an musical adventure very soon.
